Awardee:  Randy Fisher

March 30, 2012

The Randy A. Fisher Lifetime Career Achievement Award was established by the School Social Work Association of America (SSWAA) in 2012 to honor a School Social Worker for outstanding lifetime contribution to the field of School Social Work and the School Social Work Association of America.   In 2012 SSWAA presented the first annual Randy A.  Fisher Lifetime Career Achievement Award appropriately to Randy Fisher.    Randy was a founding member of SSWAA and served as SSWAA's first President from 1996-2000.  Randy was selected as the first Executive Director of SSWAA and served from 2001-2006.  He has traveled to Japan, Korea, Singapore, and Sweden talking about school social work and hosted school social workers from Japan and Korea. He led our organization during its fledgling years and witnessed a tremendous growth in membership.  During his final year as Executive Director, SSWAA had over 3,300 members -- quite an accomplishment for an organization that only began in 1994.

Randy has authored many articles about the history of school social work and published a school social work bibliography for NASW in 1979.  He has been chosen to present at numerous prestigious national and international conferences, has been editor of the School Social Work Journal and served on the editorial boards of the Iowa Journal of School Social Work and Children in Schools.  He has also received countless awards including 1988 Illinois School Social Worker of the Year and the 1998 IASSW Lifetime Achievement Award.   From 2012 to 2015, he served as a faculty member at Aurora University.  In retirement, he has organized a website on the history of school social work so that everyone will have access to important information about our profession's past.

The award will be given in his honor at subsequent conferences and know that his spirit and passion for School Social Work will live on for many years to come.
